Our International Excellence Scholarships recognise academic achievement and support talented international students to study at the University of Greater Manchester.

The scheme offers tuition fee discounts of up to £4,000 for eligible students across undergraduate, postgraduate taught and doctoral programmes, with additional awards available for specific groups.

Scholarship Structure

All International Excellence Scholarships are awarded for Year 1 only and are based on academic merit.

Global Excellence Package

Available to self-funded students applying directly (not via an agent or government sponsor) from selected countries:

Countries: Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Morrocco, Libya, Oman, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, All countries in the EU, USA, Canada, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nepal, Brazil, Columbia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Dominican Republic.

Award levels

  • Gold Award (First Class / 70% GPA or equivalent): £4,000 tuition fee discount
  • Silver Award (Upper Second / 60% GPA or equivalent): £3,000 tuition fee discount
  • Bronze Award (All other eligible applicants): £2,000 tuition fee discount

Applicable to

  • Undergraduate (3-year programmes)
  • Postgraduate Taught (including MA, MSc, MBA)
  • PhD / Doctoral programmes
  • Four-year undergraduate programmes with foundation years are eligible for the Bronze Award only.
  • MRes programmes are not eligible.

International Merit Package

Available to

  • Applicants from all other countries (not selected countries) applying directly, or
  • All applicants applying via a representative partner or agent

Award levels

Global Scholars Awards

The Global Scholars Awards represent the highest level of recognition within the International Excellence Scholarships scheme.

These prestigious awards are designed to attract exceptional international students with outstanding academic achievement, leadership potential and global ambition, who will act as ambassadors for the University of Greater Manchester.

What’s available

  • 10 Global Scholars Awards, each offering a £5,000 tuition fee discount in Year 1
  • Available to Undergraduate and PhD applicants only
  • Applicants must be eligible for a Gold International Excellence Scholarship
  • Awards are available to selected countries only (detailed above)

The Chancellor’s Excellence Scholar

From the Global Scholars Award recipients, one outstanding candidate will be selected as The Chancellor’s Excellence Scholar and will receive a 100% tuition fee discount for the first year of study.

Selection process for the Global Scholar Awards

  • Separate application required
  • Shortlisting based on academic excellence, personal statement and future impact
  • Final selection includes an interview

These awards are competitive and limited in number, reflecting the University’s commitment to supporting the very best global talent.

Additional Awards

Eligible students may also benefit from additional tuition fee discounts, which are applied at the point of CAS issuance. These include:

  • Transnational Education (TNE) Progression Award - £500 tuition fee discount

All awards are subject to eligibility criteria and terms and conditions.

Terms and Conditions

1. General Conditions

1.1 These Terms and Conditions apply to all awards offered under the International Excellence Scholarships scheme, including additional and Global Scholars Awards.

1.2 All scholarships are tuition fee discounts applied to the first year of study only.

1.3 Scholarships are non‑transferable, non‑deferrable and cannot be exchanged for cash.

1.4 Scholarships are applied at enrolment and subject to verification of eligibility.

1.5 The University reserves the right to amend or withdraw scholarships at any time.

2. Eligibility – International Excellence Scholarships

2.1 Applicants must:

  • Be classified as an international fee‑paying student
  • Hold an offer for an eligible undergraduate, postgraduate taught or doctoral programme
  • Be self‑funded (government funded students are not eligible for any awards)

2.2 Global Excellence Package awards are available only to:

  • Applicants from designated countries:
    Countries: Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Morrocco, Libya, Oman, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, All countries in the EU, USA, Canada, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nepal, Brazil, Columbia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Dominican Republic.
  • Applicants applying directly to the University (not via an agent or government sponsor)

2.3 International Merit Package awards apply to:

  • Applicants from any other country other than the specific markets in 2.2
  • Applicants using the services of a representative partner or agent

2.4 Awards are determined by highest verified academic qualification:

  • Gold First Class / 70% GPA or equivalent
  • Silver Upper Second / 60% GPA or equivalent
  • Bronze All other eligible applicants

2.5 MRes programmes are excluded.

3. Additional Awards – Specific Conditions

3.1 Women in STEM Award

  • £500 tuition fee discount (Year 1 only)
  • Available to female applicants enrolled on eligible STEM courses in Engineering, Computing, Psychology, Medical Biology and Biomedical Sciences
  • Can be combined with International Excellence Scholarships

3.2 Alumni Progression

  • International alumni progressing to a higher level of study having already studied at the University of Greater Manchester are eligible for the International Merit Package for a second time
  • Eligibility applies up to five years after graduation

3.3 TNE Progression Award

  • £500 tuition fee discount (Year 1 only)
  • Available to students progressing from an approved overseas Trans-National Education partner – enquire for more details
  • Only applicable where the applicant has not been referred via a representative partner or agent

3.4 Family Discount

  • £500 tuition fee discount (Year 1 only)
  • Available to immediate family members of current students or offer holders
  • Immediate family members are defined as spouse or partner, parent, sibling, or child
  • Relationship must be declared and verified at the point of enrolment

4. Global Scholars Awards

4.1 Global Scholars Awards

  • 10 awards of £5,000 (Year 1 only)
  • Available to Undergraduate and PhD applicants eligible for a Gold award

  • Available only to applicants for the September 2026/27 intake

4.2 Chancellor’s Excellence Scholar

  • One award covering 100% of tuition fees for Year 1 only
  • Selected from Global Scholars Award applicants

4.3 Global Scholars Awards require a separate application and interview process.

5. Combination of Awards

5.1 International Excellence Scholarships may be combined with additional awards unless stated otherwise.

5.2 The total value of combined awards may not exceed the total tuition fee for Year 1.

6. Withdrawal and Changes

6.1 Scholarships may be withdrawn if:

  • An applicant withdraws or defers
  • Conditions of offer are not met
  • Information provided is found to be inaccurate

6.2 The University’s decision on scholarship eligibility is final.
